 Not just any old crisis

Typical. You go on holiday for a couple of weeks – for instance, to the Scottish Highlands, hoping for a moment of respite from economic turmoil – only to find the whole world’s tipped upside down: George Bush is a socialist, Gordon Brown is a hero, and the banks – a couple of which I now appear to own – owe us money! I should’ve guessed something odd was afoot when, as we flew over Edinburgh, the captain warned us to expect a spot of turbulence; little did I know that twelve thousand feet below, Fred ‘The Shred’ Goodwin was quitting RBS after his bank suddenly found itself having to join the lengthening list of institutions in need of an eye-wateringly enormous bailout courtesy of already hard-pressed tax payers.........read more
